Purchasing Spotify Premium

Creating a smooth purchasing journey, that’s locally relevant on a global scale.

Background

Spotify is a Swedish audio streaming and media services provider, that transformed music listening forever when it launched in 2008. Spotify’s mission is to unlock the potential of human creativity — by giving a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art and billions of fans the opportunity to enjoy and be inspired by it.

Spotify is currently available in more than 170 countries, with 158 Million subscribers and 356 Million MAUs. This has been possible due to the huge efforts of understanding local market needs. That’s why Spotify supports many different plans; Free, Premium Individual, Premium Duo, Premium Family, Kids, and Student. On top of that, Spotify supports many different subscription models like recurring and pay-as-you-go together with a large variety of payment methods like credit/debit cards, prepaid cards, PayPal, gift cards, pay by mobile, and e-wallets. My efforts at Spotify have been focused on the purchase experience: helping users to find the right plan and pay in their preferred way through a smooth experience.

Role and responsibilities

I started to work on the checkout experience in Q4 2019 and embedded with the squad for about 1 year. During that time, I worked closely with the engineering team and product managers to bring the checkout to the next level. I led the design work for the checkout, and during that time we evaluated the current experience, developed a strategy and vision, made sure it was compliant with PSD2 and accessibility standards as well as redesigned the entire checkout component. The redesign included multiple user tests, workshops, sketching and wireframing, prototyping, final design specs, A/B test, and launching strategy. Before and during that time period, I also worked on the checkout’s scalability, including future-proofing and implementing many new payment methods for multiple market launches.

Redesigning the entire checkout

In order to meet new requirements and to allow for a more flexible experience, I redesign the entire checkout experience.
